Gateway is a temporary site-specific installation underneath the Manhattan Bridge in Chinatown. The installation is part of Under the Elevated: Reclaiming Space, Connecting Communities, a project of the Design Trust for Public Space, in partnership with the NYC Department of Transportation that looks at ways to maximize the function and spatial qualities under New York’s elevated transit infrastructure. Based on community input from a workshop, empirical research, and extensive conversations with the community collaborator, Chinatown Partnership, the team determined that the site could function as a gateway into the community for both residents and visitors alike. Often thought of as a grand entrance, a gateway typically functions as a landmark and place of orientation. With this in mind, the team designed a pop-up ‘community calendar’ to test how the space under the Manhattan Bridge could function as a place for people to learn more about what’s going on in the neighborhood. The installation also included lighting to make the space more inviting as well as information about the overall Under the Elevated project and chalkboard panels for people to respond to questions specifically about the installation. The chalkboard panels functioned as an extension of the community input and allowed more people to provide feedback. As a result of the project attracting spectators and encouraging people to linger, NYCDOT placed garbage cans in the space and installed permanent benches on the sidewalk as well as movable tables and chairs, both of which were immediately filled with people as soon as they were installed.
